What is Briwax Spray?

That’s GREAT news!  And why Briwax Spray, you ask?

BRIWAX SPRAY, is a revolutionary new introduction to our furniture and wood product line, it is a “surface shine and spray polish” for antique reproduction finishes, especially for use on hardwoods like Teak, Oak, Mahogany and Walnut where it gives added depth to tired surfaces commonly seen in antique and regular furniture showrooms. Briwax Spray is also an “all in one” top coat finish over any finish that has dulled over time.

  • Quick, and easy to use
  • Makes the wood feel silky and smooth
  • Produces a semi-gloss finish on raw timber
  • Wax shine on finished wood
  • Contains no silicones
  • Fresh aroma
  • Cleans and renews the finish

Apply a quick economical spray, wait for a minute and then wipe off with a soft buffing rag/lint free cloth for best results. On some unfinished woods, two coats of Briwax Spray will give a more even finish than one.

Now, don’t get too carried away using Briwax Spray  —  as with the traditional Briwax in paste form, a little goes a long way!

It is far superior to household sprays and other similar products. As it is a genuine WAX spray it does not contain surfactants, soaps, or silicones, it relies on the cleaning properties of the high quality selected waxes contained in the spray. Most household sprays, purchased from the grocery store, contain no wax and simply evaporate after application, leaving no protective finish.

Excellent on marble and granite – you can see from the photos above, we’re using it on our granite countertops.

Available in Clear only – 13.5 oz can.

How to Remove a White Water Ring

Look at the ugly white water ring

Oh no!  My table is ruined!  Well, maybe not . . .

Even the Briwax guy can be careless now and then.

Enjoying a cup of tea one evening I removed the lid from the travel cup I was using and set it down on the table top…steaming hot tea remember. Of course I used the coaster that was readily available to set the cup on. I always use a coaster!

Well, after the tea was consumed and I reassembled the lid to the cup I realized the error of my ways. The moisture from the hot tea lid was absorbed into the finish of this 300 year old heart pine. (The piece was made from reclaimed lumber ten years ago)

To remove the moisture from the finish all I have to do is rewax the area and the solvent in Briwax will dissolve the old wax (allowing the moisture to escape) and replace it with new Briwax.

Half way completed

The whole project took about 10 minutes because I just rewaxed the entire piece again. It had been several years since I originally waxed it.

Now it looks brand new and my wife is happy.

All done - just like new!

Remember, if you develop a white moisture ring on your furniture, just use the solvent in Briwax to remove it.

What is Briwax Liming Wax and Ceruse?

Briwax Liming Wax, white in color,  is a smooth paste formulation, which produces a white grained finish in open pored woods. Finish off the liming effect with an application of Clear Briwax to clean up the finished piece.

Note:

Lately we have received calls asking for “Ceruse” as a form of Liming wax. “Ceruse “ was a 16th century cosmetic used as a skin whitener. “Ceruse” or “Venetian Ceruse” contained a pigment composed of white lead that would eventually damage the user’s skin. A notable user of this type of cosmetic was Elizabeth I of England. The name may still be around but the product is not. If you are looking for Ceruse, just ask for Briwax Liming Wax, it does not contain lead.

Now you know . . .

Rotary Brushes

We’re pleased to announce that the Rotary Brushes (also know as The Pine Brush) are now back in stock.

The Rotary Brush is approximately 5” in diameter.  (The Rotary Brush is also known as the Pine Brush.)  This brush will take on the shape of a mushroom when it is revolving in a drill.  A very versatile brush.  This brush is great for large buffing jobs.

Wax Polishing Brushes . . . these natural bristle brushes are entirely hand made and are used by the trade to bring out the shine in a wax finish.  Designed specifically for buffing Briwax, these brushes reduce the labor of hand buffing by 50%. Great tool for old, reclaimed lumber that is left in the rough. Also very useful on carvings and deep recesses.  These brushes are made with tampico bristles which, over time, will discolor but will last for years.

Tampico is a natural vegetable fiber harvested from a variety of cactus plants that grow wild in Mexico.  The tampico fiber has a fine, delicate and smooth texture.  It has abrasive qualities which make it an excellent choice for polishing applications.  It is important to note that tampico fiber keeps its qualities and smoothness over time, while other fibers will become hard and their qualities deteriorate.

Oops, my Briwax is liquid . . . what now?

First, don’t worry . . . Briwax will turn into a liquid in hot weather.  This in no way diminishes the quality of the product.  In fact, Briwax is designed to turn liquid and can be used in a liquid state (see Using Briwax in a Liquid State on this blog).

Simply allow the container to come to room temperature – either by placing the container in the refrigerator for several hours, or by bringing the container into an air conditioned room – and Briwax will return to a paste form.

In warm weather, you might want to place the container of Briwax in an air conditioned room the night before you plan on using it. The container can be placed in the refrigerator to speed up the process.

Since Briwax is to be applied sparingly, the paste form of the wax will allow a less wasteful application.

Just remember, the quality of your Briwax is just fine – either in a liquid state or paste form!!

Calling all Wood Carvers

We receive a lot of calls from Wood Carvers who want to always use Briwax Clear on their carvings because they don’t want to obscure any of the grain. Of course we never condone always using  Briwax Clear when all wood is some shade of “Brown”. Be it light brown, reddish brown, dark brown,  golden brown or vanilla…wood is some shade of brown.

Briwax uses the natural preservation qualities of beeswax and an incorporated dye to tint and highlight the natural beauty of all woods! Using Clear Briwax will not bring out all the beauty of a Honduran Mahogany for instance. It is a naturally reddish wood and Briwax Antique Mahogany or Briwax Teak will really bring out the beauty of the wood and your carving.

Here is a photo of the first piece I ever carved, a simple sign, made of bass wood (vanilla color). I hand carved this piece in 1992 so it is now eighteen years old. I waxed the sign with Briwax Dark Brown to have it appear a rich tone.

It still looks as good as new and actually will look better as it ages more.

Here is a piece of Teak taken from an actual teak tree trunk. We cut off a slab of the trunk, carved out the center and sloped the edges. This piece was sanded to 180 grit before we waxed it with Briwax Teak.

We’ll let you be the judge on how Briwax can greatly enhance the look and ease of finishing your carvings. Even if you would chip off a corner or accidently drop a piece, simply rewax with Briwax to restore your piece. Note: I broke off a corner of this pineapple and just recently recarved it and then rewaxed it. No one will ever know!

The pineapple was carved from bass wood. Basswood is a very “vanilla” looking wood but it carves like butter! I use a wax polishing brush whenever I want to remove the wax from the crack and crevices of the carving. Sometimes it looks really good to leave the wax buildup in the cracks, looks like a shadow and this is what you are trying to achieve. If you use a clear wax, the buildup will look grey…no good! Use any color of Briwax to greatly enhance your talent!

I hope this article will help you woodcarvers out there and if so please let us know. We can also include more tips and tricks on getting the most out of what you do.
